During my time in school, I relocated to Lisbon, where I ended up falling in love—not just with my girlfriend, but with the city itself. I've now called Lisbon home for the past two and a half years, so here is a collection of my favorite places to rock your vacation in the city of the seven hills.

City overview

What the map fails to reveal is the city's hilly nature. Alfama on the right-hand side sits atop a hill, Chiado lies in a valley, and Bairro Alto is perched on yet another hill. Get ready for a lot of uphill and downhill walking. Your glutes are going to feel the burn!

Map of Lisbon

The essentials

Alfama

Our tour kicks off in the eastern part of the city. Alfama stands out with its many viewpoints and charming little restaurants.

Check out Castelo Sao Jorge. The views of the city from there are stunning.

Baixo Chiado & Cais do Sodre

  • Palacio Chiado returns Lisbon to its former glory by transforming an ancient palace into a vibrant culinary hub. The space harmoniously blends historic charm and modern sophistication, offering visitors a unique dining experience.
  • Head to Pink Street for a drink.
  • Pensao Amor: a top-notch club on Pink Street.
  • From Cais do Sodre, you have the option of catching a water taxi to reach Cristo Rei, the towering Jesus statue across the river.

Bairro Alto & Príncipe Real

Starting from Pink Street, you can hike up to Bairro Alto. At Erasmus corner, budget-friendly drinks are available. This is true for Bica as well. Take a look at these highlights:

  • Sure, here's the rewritten text: Monte da Bica
  • Sure! Here is the passage with natural rephrasing: Sobe & Desce
  • Kisoque located in Jardim do Príncipe Real. Maintain the same atmosphere and feel of the text, keeping phrases and HTML tags unaltered.

Belém

Make sure you visit beautiful Belém.

You can hop on the train from Cais do Sodré to reach this destination. It’s the birthplace of Pastéis de Belém, the famous egg custards unique to this area (distinct from Pastéis de Nata), and it features a stunning monastery along with charming parks.

Best Seafood

  • Certainly! Here's the text rewritten: Restaurant Lis. Maintain the mood and tone of the text along with any phrases and HTML tags without changing them.
  • Mar do Inferno (located well outside of Lisbon, but they have the finest octopus you’ll ever taste).

Best typical Portuguese food

  • As Bifanas do Afonso (the top spot for bifanas in the area, which are essentially steaks in bread; more like a snack really).
  • ## Frade dos Mares Nestled in a picturesque setting, Frade dos Mares boasts a unique charm that keeps patrons coming back for more. This delightful venue offers a culinary experience that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, ensuring every visit is as memorable as the last. Whether you're a seafood aficionado or a lover of classic flavors, the menu is crafted to cater to all taste buds, promising a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The warm and inviting atmosphere perfectly complements the exquisite dishes, making it a quintessential spot for both casual gatherings and special occasions.

Additionally, I suggest giving Portuguese/Spanish tapas restaurants a try (see below).

Best steaks

  • Sala de Corte

Great Portuguese / Spanish Tapas (book a table).

  • Certainly! Here’s a rephrased version: Tapa Bucho. Maintain the style and feeling of the original text while keeping phrases and HTML tags unchanged.
  • Sure, could you provide the text you want rewritten?
  • Estrela da Bica.

Best coffee (and remote work)

  • You can get excellent coffee at practically any kiosque (those small green booths at every square and viewpoint).
  • every Padaria Portuguesa serves excellent coffee too (see breakfast section).

If you're in the mood for something a bit more upscale, check out one of these coffee spots:.

  • Copenhagen Coffee Lab & Bakery. The blend of cozy atmosphere and artisanal pastries.
  • Give it a Shot — Indulge in Our Specialty Coffee.
  • Hygge Kaffe.

Copenhagen Coffee Lab and Give it a Shot are both excellent spots for getting work done.

Best brunch/breakfast

  • Padaria Portuguesa offers a Pequeno Almoco (little breakfast) for just 2.99€, which includes fresh-pressed orange juice, a bread roll with cheese and ham, and an espresso. You'll find their locations scattered throughout Lisbon—just search on Google Maps to find the nearest one.
  • Padaria do Bairro competes with Padaria Portuguesa, offering a very similar breakfast menu. It’s a good idea to see which of the two is nearer to you.

If you're looking for something a bit more upscale, consider trying one of these options (just remember to book ahead, as they tend to be quite popular on weekends):

  • Certainly! Here is your revised text keeping the same mood and tone: For centuries, humanity has held a profound fascination with the rich diversity of animal and plant life. Nature's inhabitants, from the smallest microorganisms to the largest mammals and tallest trees, all contribute to the intricate web of ecosystems that sustain our planet. Through ongoing research and exploration, scientists continue to uncover new species and marvel at the incredible adaptations that allow flora and fauna to thrive in various environments. By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of these natural wonders, we can better protect and preserve the delicate balance of life on Earth for future generations to enjoy.
  • Sure, I can rewrite the text with the specified requirements: Zenith
  • Nicolau Lisboa
  • Welcome to Seagull Method cafe. Embrace the vibe and energy of our cozy spot while enjoying a delightful mix of unique flavors and perfectly brewed coffee. Our café invites you to relax, savor, and make lasting memories with every cup you sip.
  • Sure, here is the rewritten text: --- Discover the charm of Café Janis, where delightful ambiance meets exquisite flavors.
  • Hygge Kaffe. Maintain the ambiance and tone of the text while keeping phrases and HTML tags exactly as they are.
  • Sure, I can help with that! Please go ahead and provide me with the text you'd like to be rewritten.

Rooftop Bars:

  • Sky Bar. Maintain the lively atmosphere and energy of the original text, while rephrasing the content in a natural manner yet keeping the keywords and HTML tags intact.
  • Garden Rooftop. Maintain the ambiance and style of the text without altering phrases and HTML tags.
  • TOPO MARTIM MONIZ
  • Topo Chiado. Capture the same mood and tone but keep the phrases and HTML tags intact while rephrasing naturally.
  • Java Rooftop

Best viewpoints in Lisbon

For a more laid-back experience, I suggest bringing your own drinks and taking in the sunset at one of these Miradouros (classic Lisbon viewpoints):

  • Miradouro de Santa Catarina. Maintain the ambiance and style of the original text without altering any phrases or HTML tags.
  • Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. Retain the ambiance and spirit of the text, refraining from modifying phrases and HTML tags.
  • Miradouro da Graça stands as a must-visit spot. Embrace the stunning views and let the atmosphere captivate you.
  • Miradouro de Santa Luzia offers an enchanting vantage point.
  • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is one of Lisbon’s hidden gems.
  • Observation Deck Park Eduardo VII.

Best Pastel de Nata:

  • Manteigaria has several locations spread throughout Lisbon. Open even in the middle of the night, this spot serves piping hot Pastéis de Nata whenever you crave a delicious treat. Pair one with a shot of espresso to invigorate your senses.
  • Pastéis de Belém. This isn't your usual Pastel de Nata; it's a Pastel De Belém (local rivalry), so make sure not to ask for a Pastel de Nata. Experience the difference firsthand and wisely pick your favorite.

Best beaches

Unlike Barcelona and other popular tourist destinations in Southern Europe, Portugal doesn’t boast beaches within its cities. The nearest small beach begins on the outskirts of Lisbon, in Algés. From Cais do Sodre, you can conveniently catch a train that follows the Tejo river towards the ocean, leading you to many other beaches situated just beyond Lisbon. Here is my favorite one:

  • Carcavelos beach can get quite packed on weekends, but it's worth a visit. There's also a lovely restaurant perfect for watching sunsets, called Capricciosa.

If you're planning a beach day trip, cross the bridge or venture even further beyond Lisbon.

Further outside of Lisbon:

  • Praia da Ursa is a beautiful beach characterized by its rugged landscape, with dramatic cliffs and pristine sand. This hidden gem offers visitors a chance to experience nature in its most unspoiled state, away from the typical tourist spots. The beach is often described as a sanctuary for those seeking peace and breathtaking scenery.
  • Praia do Guincho (renowned for its stunning dunes).

Other side of the river:

  • Sure, here's a natural-sounding rewrite of the text: ### Costa Da Caparica Just across the Tagus River from Lisbon lies Costa da Caparica, a stretch of stunning beaches that draw sunbathers and surfers alike. This hotspot is celebrated for its long coastline, vibrant beach bars, and laid-back atmosphere. Ideal for both relaxation and adventure, Costa da Caparica offers a diverse seaside experience that caters to everyone. Discover the charm and beauty of this coastal gem, a must-visit destination for beach lovers.
  • Praia do Portinho da Arrábida. Retain the spirit and atmosphere of the location while creating an original version.
  • Península de Troia (dreamy white sand beaches and pristine, crystal-clear waters).
